A quality choice for Derek

Derek Colwell had been claiming job seekers allowance since being made redundant from Smethwick Drop Forge (SDF), after several years of employment. As Derek was keen to  keep himself busy whilst looking for work, his work coach at Kidderminster Job Centre Plus suggested Vestia’s nine day Employability programme.

Course tutor, Darren Robinson said: “Derek was always willing to contribute during course activities and discussions. The delegates ages on the course ranged from mid twenties to early sixties and Derek was able to get along with all members of the group and share his experiences whenever required. Derek’s personality and character was jolly and upbeat at all times and this helped the whole group to bond.”

When asked what he gained from his Employability experience, he stated: “I was already fairly confident when talking in a group environment but lacked it when speaking on a 1-2-1 basis. This course helped me to build and sustain my confidence, which in turn helped me perform better when attending interviews.”

When asked if he would recommend the Employability programme, Derek said: “The programme is definitely worthwhile doing. We completed work in an informal way and were under no pressure.  The information provided was accurate and informative, and it was a relaxed environment.”

Derek completed the programme in mid-January 2017 and shortly after was contacted by SDF and asked to return to his previous post. Derek is currently working for SDF under the revised company name of SDF Automotive, where he now works on the Quality Control and Inspection department.
