Building Better Opportunities – Good News Story - Elizabeth Powers

The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is a National Lottery and ESF funded project designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire, this project is proud to tell you the story of Elizabeth Powers.

As a tenant of The Community Housing Group, Liz had been working with Vestia for some time by attending Job Club for support in identifying suitable volunteering vacancies. Liz had been volunteering for many years in a variety of different roles and had made the decision that she would like to gain suitable, sustainable, paid employment. As she struggles to identify suitable vacancies, she therefore decided to join Building Better Opportunities for one-to-one support with this.

Liz was very motivated and so straight away we updated her CV and restored both her Universal Job Match and Indeed accounts. She had support in identifying suitable jobs and understanding her capabilities, and quickly realised that she would like to apply to work in a school as a Lunchtime Supervisor. Very soon Liz secured an interview and we completed interview preparations, researching the school and going through common interview questions. Although she was unfortunately unsuccessful, Liz was offered some work experience in the role to help improve her future employability. She took up the work experience offer and we continued to apply for similar roles.

With her biggest barrier being a lack of experience in a school setting, work experience was very beneficial for her. Liz has some mild learning difficulties and therefore required ongoing support with identifying suitable vacancies, completing application forms and preparation for interviews. She was looking for a supportive employer who would be able to help her transition from volunteering to paid employment.

After several interviews, Liz secured employment as a Lunchtime Supervisor in a school and started work on 3rd September. She is over the moon and is able to take advantage of the Permitted Work scheme which will give her security for her benefits and ensure that she is better off in work.

Liz hopes to settle into her new role and eventually increase her hours by looking at work in an after-school club that will fit in around her new role, so that she will be able to sign off benefits and sustain herself financially.
