Building Better Opportunities – Good News Story - James Dixon
The Big Lottery Fund is the largest funder of community activity in the UK. It puts people in the lead to improve their lives and communities, often through small local projects. Building Better Opportunities is a National Lottery and ESF funded project designed to tackle poverty and promote social inclusion throughout Worcestershire. This project is proud to tell you the story of James Dixon.
After making a claim to Universal Credit, James a tenant of The Community Housing Group, was referred to Building Better Opportunities by his Job Centre Work Coach for additional support in searching and applying for jobs. James was very shy and needed some help making sure that his applications were of a high standard.
James was happy with his CV, so it remained largely the same but was updated to reflect his most recent work experience and the skills that he gained from this. As his self-confidence was quite low, a lot of emphasis was placed on confidence building and highlighting his skills and strengths. James attended Jobs Club sessions and had 1-2-1 support with application forms and online applications.
Throughout his time on Building Better Opportunities, James’ confidence grew and even his Work Coach advised that he was sitting up straighter and making more eye contact. As his confidence grew and to continue his positive momentum, he attended and completed a two week City & Guilds Level 1 course in Employability Skills, run by Vestia. This allowed him to continue to develop his confidence within a group environment, giving him the opportunity to reaffirm and practice his job searching skills. Whilst attending the employability skills course, James secured an interview for TH Baker and following his interview, he was offered the position of Seasonal Packer. He was very pleased and proud of himself which will give him more independence.
James says of Building Better Opportunities: “It has helped me with my CV and built my self-confidence as well as my confidence working in groups. It has also helped me to learn how to improve my applications and I would recommend BBO to anyone wanting some help with looking for work.”
