New Chief Executive appointment for The Community Housing Group

The Community Housing Group based in Wyre Forest has announced the appointment of a new Group Chief Executive following the retirement of Ray Brookes in June 2020.

Matt Cooney will join the Group in September 2020 and brings a wealth of experience from previous roles within the social housing sector.

He has held senior roles at a number of local authorities and became the Chief Executive of Solihull Community Housing in 2004. Under his leadership the organisation was awarded the highest 3 star rating for excellence by the Audit Commission.

In 2010, Matt became Chief Executive of Asra Housing Group and successfully brought the organisation through a merger with Paragon Community Housing in 2017. The new company, PA Housing, owns more than 23,000 homes in London, Surrey and the Midlands.

In 2019, he joined Surrey County Council as Interim Chief Property Officer to transform their property portfolio and improve asset management outcomes. Matt Cooney said: “I am delighted to be joining The Community Housing Group and I look forward to working with colleagues, customers and partners to build on the success of developing community housing services and develop the next chapter for The Community Housing Group. My aim is to work with stakeholders to develop a reputation as a strong provider of new housing and for developing excellent services.”

Andrew Foster, Group Chair said: “We are very pleased to welcome Matt to the Group. We have ambitious business plans and we are confident that he brings a valuable set of skills with him to help us to continue to prosper and grow.”

Joyce Hopkins, Chair of the Customer Voice and Assurance Group (CVAG) commented: “As Chair of the CVAG, I was invited by the Group Chair to be involved in the recruitment process for the new CEO. It gave me an early opportunity to grill Matt about his experience and views on customer engagement. Now that he’s been appointed, the CVAG are looking forward to working with him and discussing how we can build on the Customer Engagement Strategy of the Group which we oversee as part of our role in co-regulating service delivery.”

The Community Housing Group has around 6,000 homes across the Wyre Forest District and plans to deliver a further 258 new homes by 2021. Their award winning Construction and Development Team (who have recently received 6 nominations in West of England LABC Building Excellence Awards 2020) look for innovative construction methods and best use of land to ensure that homes exceed the Government’s Decent Homes Standard and are well equipped for modern, digitally connected lifestyles.

In addition to offering homes for rent, sale and shared ownership for customers with different housing needs and an extensive range of housing, care and support and employment services, the Group is leading the way in developing technology enabled care (TEC) solutions for customers across the County and surrounding areas. Its 24 hour monitoring and response centre offers an enhanced support service through the use of sensors and digital technology which is designed to support independent living at home. Their solutions not only enhance the lives of customers but provide substantial cost savings for commissioning bodies and social care providers.

An exciting time for Matt to join the Group and shape its future development.
